About AGM Batteries…
AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat. This refers to the construction of the battery.
AGM batteries differ from flooded lead acid batteries (wet), like standard automotive batteries, in that the electrolyte is held in the glass mats instead of freely flooding the plates. Fragile glass fibres are woven into a mat to increase surface area enough to have sufficient electrolytes on the cells for their lifetime. The fibres that compose the fine glass mat do not absorb or are affected by the acidic electrolyte.
AGM batteries can be fitted in any orientation and do not require constant maintenance. However, this does not mean they shouldn’t be regularly cleaned and tested.
AGM batteries have a cycle life of approximately 300 cycles to 80% depth of discharge. Although AGM batteries will not match Gel batteries’ cycle-life performance, they offer a lower initial cost. They will supply sufficient functionality to meet the less critical needs of specific lighter-duty mobility applications.
